Company History

The company was established in the form of National Thermal Power Corporation Private Limited on 7 7 November, 1975. It was created by Government of India. It was in the year of 1976 that the firm began their first thermoelectric power project in Shaktinagar located in Uttar Pradesh. In 1976, the name changed and became National Thermal Power Corporation Limited in the year. NTPC started commercial operation in the year 1983. It had the power generation capacity of 2000MW at the time of its closure in 1985.

NTPC changed to an unincorporated public company in 1985. It reached the 5000MW installed capacity in 1987. In 1992, NTPC purchased its first power plant, the Feroze Gandhi Unchahar Thermal Power Station located in Uttar Pradesh. The company surpassed a historical achievement in 1997 when it produced more than 100 billion units in one year.

NTPC began construction of its first hydroelectric power project with a capacity of 8000 MW within Himachal Pradesh in 2000. As of October 5, 2005, the name of the company altered in the name from National Thermal Power Corporation Limited to NTPC Limited.

Current Status

NTPC Limited is the largest power company in India with a capacity of 85 gigawatts. It makes up 24% of India’s production capacity of power. The company owns directly 27 coal-based power plants, seven gas/liquid fuel-based power plants 17 solar power stations as well as 1 hydro-plant and one small hydro-plant. Additionally, it has additional 56 plants through joint ventures and subsidiary companies.

Future Outlook

NTPC is advancing towards green power generation, in the hopes of achieving sixty GW renewable energy power capacity in 2032. The company has a lofty plan to increase the capacity of its power generation to 244 GW by 2037.
