Company History
Bharat Earth Movers Limited established on 11 May 1964. May 1964, by the Government of India, with technical assistance from the Soviet Union. The company was formed to produce mining equipment railway coaches, as well as spare parts. The company began operations in 1965, with a small turnover in the range of INR 5 million.
The company’s initial focus was to produce rolling material in order to supply railways, the Indian Railways and earthmoving equipment. In the 70s and 90s the company expanded its manufacturing capabilities, and expanded into defense products, high-mobility vehicles, and modern mining equipment.
In 1992, The Government of India divested 25 percent of its holdings of the firm. The company announced a follow-on Public Offer in July of 2007. On the 5 October Oct. 2007, the name of the business has been officially changed to Bharat Earth Movers Limited BEML Limited. The company then diversified into three business sectors that include Defence and Aerospace, Mining and Construction and Rail and Metro.
Current Status
BEML Limited operates manufacturing facilities in the Kolar Gold Fields Complex near Bangalore, Bangalore Complex, Palakkad Complex and Mysore Complex. KGF Complex is the main site for development, design manufacturing, testing, and after-sales services for earthmoving equipment such as bulldozers and excavators. Bangalore Complex is principally involved in the manufacture trains coaches. Palakkad Complex deals mainly with railway coach shells. Mysore Complex manufactures dump trucks as well diesel engines with fuel efficiency of various capacities.
BEML has supplied more than 18,000 railway passenger coaches towards Indian Railways. Indian Railways, more than 8,500 high-mobility vehicles for the defense forces, more than 32,500 construction and mining equipment, more than 27,500 engines, and more than 3,200 military wagons and trailers to the defence services, and over 330 pontoon bridges to the defence service.

BEML’s long-term prospects are positive, driven by India’s defence modernisation, railway and metro expansion and mining/infrastructure growth under initiatives like Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. BEML has a strong order book, with a focus on defense and metro and rail segments.
