Corporate History
The history of Barclays was established on the 17th of November, 1690 the day two Quakers, John Freame and Thomas Gould, began working as bankers in the goldsmith trade at Lombard Street in London. After James Barclay, Freame’s son-in-law joined the business to become a shareholder in 1736 The name “Barclays” was connected to it. Barclays increased its branch network by purchasing the local English bank between 1905 until 1916. Following its merger of its predecessors, the London, Provincial, and South Western Bank as well as its 1909 acquisition of the British Linen Bank, Barclays continued to expand its branch network.
